trekaroo Privacy Policy

The effective date of this Privacy Policy is May 7, 2024.

We at trekaroo, inc., a Delaware corporation (“trekaroo”) care about your right to privacy. This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) is designed to provide you with an overview of what type of information we collect and how that information is used, disclosed and protected with respect to http://www.trekaroo.com (“Site”).

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully before providing us with any personal information. If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, email us at [email protected].

  1. Information we collect

There are two basic types of information that is collected from our Site: (i) personally identifiable information and (ii) aggregate information. Personally identifiable information is data that is directly associated with a specific person or entity such as a user’s name, e-mail address, or information about activities that is directly linked to that person.

The choice of how much personally identifiable information you disclose to us is completely at your discretion. Some areas of our Site are accessible without registration of any kind, and you can browse those areas of our Site. Other areas of our Site require registration in order for you to participate in the services offered. It is not mandatory for you to register and provide information to us, but please realize that in order for us to serve you better or provide particular features, you will need to provide certain information to access some areas of our Site. We collect information you give us when you register at and use our Site.

Also, if you use the Site to make purchases or bookings, you may have to provide personal information like phone number, billing and shipping addresses and credit card information. We may also request other shopping preferences and similar information.

Personally identifiable information does not include “aggregate” information. Aggregate information is data we collect about a group or category of services or users from which individual user identities have been removed. Aggregate data may include anonymous demographic information such as country of origin, citizenship, ZIP code, age, gender, preferences and survey information. In other words, how you use our Site may be collected and combined with information about how others use the Site, but no personal information will be included in the resulting data. Aggregate data helps us understand trends and our users’ needs so that we can better consider new features or otherwise tailor our Site.

    Unregistered users
As an unregistered user, you will be able to access many portions of our Site, but will not be able to leverage our personalization features for your trip planning needs. If you choose to not register, then the information we collect from you is limited. The only information we could collect is your IP address in order to diagnose problems with our servers and usage metrics.

    Registered users
As a registered user, you will be able to share your content and information on our Site. For example, you may post your own ratings and reviews. You will also be able to send your trekaroo content to your network. In addition, registered users have access to all of trekaroo’s personalization features. As a registered user, we will be better able to serve you better and provide you with the unique feature set that only registered users can access.

If you choose to link your Facebook account to your user profile, we will receive your name, email address and profile picture associated with that account. The Site in some instances may use the Facebook commenting system, so if you choose to comment on a Site post, your profile picture will appear.

  2. Cookies

We automatically receive certain types of information whenever you interact with us. For example, when you visit the Site, our systems automatically collect standard user information for all users, including a user’s IP address, operating system, and page views. Information may be automatically collected through the use of “cookies.” Cookies are data snippets that websites store on your computer’s hard drive. We use cookies to analyze site use, target ads, store your preferences/passwords (if you have registered) and personalize your experience. You can configure most web browsers to reject cookies or notify you when cookies are placed. You must accept cookies to access the Site as a registered user. Your access provider assigns an IP address to your computer when you use the Internet. We log each IP address that accesses the Site, along with referring/destination URLs. We use this data, as well as other data in our databases, to analyze site and user behavior, troubleshoot technical problems, resolve disputes, address complaints and prepare aggregated reports that we share with others.

  3. Third party cookies

We provide links to services provided by third party websites, which may, or may not, use cookies, pixel tags and web tags. We also allow other companies, called third-party ad servers, to display advertisements on the Site. Ad servers may also use these tools to compile information about where users saw particular advertisements, and to determine which ads were clicked on. We are not responsible for, or have any control over, the privacy policies of those third party websites and ad servers, and encourage all users to read the privacy policies of each and every website visited when linking directly from the Site.

Cookies are important devices for both serving more relevant ads to users and measuring advertising effectiveness. You may opt out of accepting cookies at any time. Some of the services may include Google Adsense, DoubleClick, and Mediavine.

    To opt-out, please visit http://www.aboutads.info/choices or http://networkadvertising.org/choices.
In Canada, you may opt out via https://youradchoices.ca.
In the EU/EEA, you may opt out via http://www.youronlinechoices.eu.

  4. Affiliate program participation

The Site may engage in affiliate marketing, which involves embedding tracking links into the Site. If you click on a link for an affiliate partnership, a cookie will be placed on your browser to track any sales for purposes of commissions.

Some of the affiliate programs trekaroo participates in may include but are not limited to:
    Booking.com – Hotel booking
    World Nomads – Travel insurance
    RentalCars.com – Car rentals
    Stay22.com – Travel bookings

  5. Email newsletters

On the Site, you may subscribe to our newsletter, which may be used for advertising purposes. All newsletters sent may contain tracking pixels. The pixel is embedded in emails and enables an analysis of the success of online marketing campaigns. Because of these tracking pixels, we may see if and when you open an email and which links within the email you click. Also, this allows the Site to adapt the content of future newsletters to the interests of the user. This behavior will not be passed on to third parties.

  6. Site analytics

Google Analytics – We use Google Analytics to track Site usage and provide information such as referring websites and user actions on the Site. All IP address information is anonymized when sent to Google analytics services and no other personal information is captured by Google Analytics.

    .
  7. How we use the information collected

In general, we use personal information to serve our users, enable them to take maximum advantage of our services and to improve the products and services we provide to you. For example, we may use personal information to allow you to automatically log into our Site every time you visit as opposed to manually entering your login information each time. We may also use your personal information to contact you with news or important information from trekaroo to provide you with other information, and invitations related to your membership or community, including but not limited to new services, offers and promotional programs. We may email you additional material, but only if you request to receive them. We do not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies, except when we have your consent to do so, as is necessary to complete a transaction you have requested, when required by law, or when permitted to protect our rights or property.

Third parties may independently collect information about users when users choose to view links or ads displayed on the Site. Users should contact those third parties directly if they do not wish to receive communications from them, or do not want those third parties to collect information about them.

Information about our users, including personal information, will be disclosed as part of any merger or acquisition, creation of a separate business to provide the Site or fulfill products, sale or pledge of company assets as well as in the event of an insolvency, bankruptcy or receivership in which personal information would be transferred as one of trekaroo’s business assets.

  9. Rights related to your personal information

Opt-out – You may opt-out of email communications by following the unsubscribe links in our emails or from your account settings. You may also notify us at [email protected].

Access – You may access the personal information we have about you by logging into your account and viewing your profile.

Change – You may change your personal information by logging into your account and editing your profile.

Forget – In certain situations, you may request that we erase or forget your personal data. You may submit a request to [email protected]. We will send you an e-mail to confirm your request. After we receive confirmation, we will remove your information from our active database, but some information may remain in our archives for recordkeeping purposes or if required by law.

  10. Security

Trekaroo takes appropriate precautions to protect our users’ information. Your account information is located on a secured server behind a firewall. We encrypt personal information using industry standard secure socket layer technology (SSL). We also employ processes such as password hashing. Passwords are never stored or transmitted in an unencrypted format.

If you purchase products and services through the Site, we use [Transport Layer Security (TLS)], the industry-standard encryption technology that ensures the safety and security of your online purchase. [When the letters “http” in the URL address change to “https,” the “s” indicates you are in a secure area employing TLS. Making a credit card purchase is just as safe on our Site as it is by telephone. If you prefer to order products and services from the website by phone, please call us at [650-549-5503].

  11. Children’s privacy

Trekaroo does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 16 years or knowingly allow such persons to register. If you are under 16 years of age, please do not attempt to register on the Site or send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address. No person under age 16 may provide any personal information to or on the Site. In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a person under age 16 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe that we might have any personal information from or about a child under age 16, please contact us at [email protected].

  12. Notification of changes

We reserve the right to change our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Use and Additional terms of Use, at any time. 13. Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)

The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.

First party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality so that you can block both first and third-party cookies and clear your browser’s cache. The “help” feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies and how to clear your browser’s cache. For more information about cookies and how to disable them, you can consult the information at All About Cookies.

Without cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Website content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean that you will no longer see ads when you visit our Site. In the event you opt-out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements on the Website.

The Website collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads:

  • IP Address
  • Operating System type
  • Operating System version
  • Device Type
  • Language of the website
  • Web browser type
  • Email (in hashed form)

Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.
